Nosotros En Naturaleza.
Hey, hello, hola! It's me again, but this time with something a little different. Do y'all remember in my last blog when I said that this year I was going to share something big? Or maybe you didn't read it, and this is your first time hearing about me sharing some big news... (fake fans, smh) haha, just kidding. Anyway, brace yourselves!
Well, if you follow my personal Instagram or know me personally, you know I'm all about trying to get outside for those breathtaking hikes and scenic outdoor spots. My journey with the outdoors and my many years of working with youth (which I think are quite a few) have sparked a passion project close to my heart – Nosotros En Naturaleza (NEN).
What is Nosotros En Naturaleza?
My adventure into hiking and the outdoors isn't just about picturesque trails; it's deeply rooted in my work with youth from underserved communities. For years, I've been advising, mentoring, and guiding youth of all ages, many of whom face life challenges similar to mine. As an undocumented DACA recipient, my own path has been dotted with unexpected explorations I never thought I'd be doing, from visiting some of the biggest national parks in the USA to reconnecting with my roots in Mexico after 19 years—and also having the chance to explore nature there. Through NEN, I'm channeling this spirit to inspire and continue motivating young individuals that anything is possible!
I always thought hiking and the outdoors were a “white/American” thing and, to be honest, this was mostly true for most of my professional life working at the YMCA and for my city job in the parks and recreation department, where there was little to no diversity in the outdoor programs. I want to change that. I want something that represents our people and my community, something that stands for nosotros but, most importantly, feels right.
Washington State's beauty is unparalleled, and I believe everyone should be able to experience it. With NEN, we're not just hiking; we're forging meaningful connections, sharing stories, and creating a space of inclusivity.
I still remember my first hike to Rattlesnake Ridge in North Bend, and let's just say, it was less than ideal. However, it taught me the importance of the right company and environment, and that's exactly what I want to focus on with this project—real connections and, of course, super awesome Instagram-worthy pics!
How it all started - the vision.
So, you know how I mentioned I've been a part of many youth programs and have served as a mentor to numerous young adults? Well, I am more than thankful for these opportunities God has put in my path, BUT every time I engage in these activities (the outdoorsy ones), whether it's with my old jobs or my current job, I always feel like there's something missing. I never feel like the experience is genuine, and yeah, I know... there are rules, budgets, curriculum, etc., that non-profits and companies have to follow, but that's where I come in.
I've always wanted to have the freedom to structure a program that includes all the elements of a good outdoor experience/hike: a good warm-up, chatting with those around you - building connections, education about the area you're visiting, taking super awesome Instagram-worthy pics, enjoying breaks with snacks (good snacks, not just Ritz and applesauce - sorry, YMCA), and of course, a good post-hike meal! I've always wanted to be able to share this experience with others, especially those who have never experienced it before. Like I wrote in my previous blog, hiking shouldn't just be about going to a dirt, foresty place and walking for hours; it should be an experience you can remember and talk about, although yes, it's also about the gains!
How it's possible:
Curious about how NEN is coming to life? Me. I'm pouring my heart and resources into this—from covering travel costs and post-hike meals to providing stipends for program completion. And that's why I need your help. If you can, please consider donating to support this passion project, which I strongly believe is very much needed here in WA State. Rest assured, 100% of your contributions will enrich our activities and the experiences of our local youth.
Join me on this journey to share, educate, and expose young adults all around the South King County Area to the wonders of nature. Together, we can make Nosotros En Naturaleza a truly life-changing experience of hope and adventure.
If you are interested in donating, or just want to support this project, please give us a follow on Instagram @nosotrosennaturaleza. It would truly mean a lot.
More updates coming soon!
Thank you so much.
